By understanding the complex dynamics underlying trolling behavior in VR, this research contributes to the development of interventions aimed at fostering positive experiences. The interviews revealed a range of motivations driving individuals to engage in trolling behavior within VR environments.
Here are a few quotes from our interviews with the community. Due to their sensitive nature, all speakers have been anonymized.
“I want to do something, but I might also get insulted too”
“If it gets too bad, then I might have to step in”
“Victim should get help from their families”
“If I can say something, or make an impact, I at least try. But I also find reverse trolling is very easy on those types of people.”
“If I make you uncomfortable, you tell me. It’s a safer, healthier, and friendly way to figure out what can and can’t be said.”
“Some people try to ruin a good thing. It’s better to find out boundaries naturally. It’s a lot worse when someone comes up and you just met them and they say hey, don’t make jokes; because it sets a negative tone. And you have to dance around and avoid that & it’s not fun”
